IEC TC 9 met in Helsinki on 12.-13. May 2026

The IEC TC 9 Management & Multiple Group and Chair’s Advisory Group meetings brought together the chairs of various working groups in Helsinki, hosted by SESKO.

In May, Helsinki served as an important meeting point for international standardization when SESKO hosted the IEC TC 9 Management & Multiple Group and CAG meetings for the international committee on railway electrical and electronic equipment. The meetings reinforced Finland’s role in international cooperation on railway standardization. A total of 13 representatives from six countries (Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Finland) attended in person, while more than 20 additional representatives from member countries around the world participated virtually.

At the core of the meetings were working group reports in which convenors, project leaders, and maintenance team leaders presented the progress of their work. The participants also reviewed how previous decisions had been implemented in practice. This provided a clear overall picture of the progress of standardization projects and enabled participants to prioritize work and assess necessary follow-up actions.

IEC TC 9 / AG CAG – (Chair’s Advisory Group)

The CAG is led by the Chair of IEC TC 9 and includes, ex officio, representatives from the IEC Secretariat as well as officers from CENELEC TC 9X. In addition, the group may include up to 12 other members. The group serves as a key advisory body to IEC TC 9, supporting the committee in both strategic and operational decision-making. Its role extends broadly across the development and direction of standardization activities.

A current example of IEC TC 9’s work is the IEC 63452 standard (Railway applications – Cybersecurity), which will be published this year and highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in railway systems. With increasing digitalization, security management has become a major focus area in IEC TC 9’s work as well.

In Finland, the preparation of this standard also involves SESKO’s SR 9 monitoring group, which is responsible for the international standardization of electrical equipment and systems used in railways.
