This seminar is organized alongside the international committee meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 41, focusing on IoT and digital twins. François Coallier, Chair of ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 41, will present the committee’s activities and ongoing standardization projects. Additionally, significant European projects will showcase their achievements and future plans under the theme “Glimpse of European Innovation”. Finnish IoT and digital twin application developers will also share their use cases.

A Glimpse of Europe Innovation Workshop commensed at 15:00 PM

The Glimpse of Europe Innovation Workshop officially began at 15:00 PM with a welcome speech by Jukka Alve from SESKO. Jukka Alve warmly welcomed all participants and introduced representatives from the SC41 meeting, special guests from Finland, and presenters from European and Finnish IoT and Digital Twin projects. The workshop is a joint collaboration of SESKO, AIOTI and OpenContinuum and sponsoring projects aerOS, Auroral, Begonia, Enershare, Fluidos, Int:net, Instar, Omega-X, and Spade. The day’s program will continue with presentations and discussions from these topics.

The seminar organizers, AIOTI’s Secretary General Damir Filipovic and OpenContinuum’s coordinator Albert Seubers, warmly welcomed the audience to the event and briefly spoke about their own activities.

The workshop covered enablers and use cases for the computing continuum in a comprehensive program. Lara Lopéz (Eviden) began with a presentation on the taxonomy of the computing continuum. She was followed by Anastasios Zafeiropoulos (NTUA), who presented enablers and use cases in the Nephele project, and Alejandro Fornés (UPV), who discussed similar aspects in the Aeros project. Additionally, the enablers of the FLUIDOS project were presented. This part of the workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the topic. The discussion provided attendees with a thorough overview of the latest developments and applications in the field of the computing continuum.

Alberto Dognini from Fraunhofer FIT presented interoperability in energy data spaces. Following him, Charukeshi Joglekar from the same institution discussed the reference architecture in the Enershare project. Additionally, Bruno Traverson from EDF introduced interoperability-driven energy use cases in the Omega-X project. The session concluded with a Q&A session, providing participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the topic.

In a segment dedicated to examining use cases in both Europe and Finland, attendees were treated to a diverse array of insights. The session commenced with Aris Tagarakis from CERTH presenting agriculture use cases in SPADE. Following this, Asbjørn Hovstø from Hafenstrom discussed AURORAL use cases. Hafenstrom unveiled an enticing opportunity for those delving into new smart communities and complementary services during the workshop. Interested parties can apply for funding for their cases, with the deadline set for June 28, 2024.


Wirepas, represented by an electricity meter manufacturer specializing in mesh networks Jussi Numminen, shared their expertise on the DECT NR+ radio standard, which enables self-organizing radio networks, including for electricity meters. You can find the presentation slides here.
Mika Karaila from Valmet then introduced the OPC UA and FMU Digital Twin in the Virtual Sea project. The conclusion of the project was promising implementation that will give more flexibility and testing capabilities.
The segment concluded with a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for interactive dialogue and further exploration of the presented use cases. Even possible promise of contributions.

Damir Filipovic from INSTAR discussed standardization cooperation, emphasizing the significance of collaboration in setting industry standards. Following this, Razgar Ebrahimy from DTU presented on cross-border operational digital platforms as part of the BEGONIA project, stating, “We can merge cross border technologies if policy and regulation of countries can adopt to this.” The session concluded with a Q&A session, providing attendees with an opportunity to engage further on these topics.

The workshop reached its conclusion with a presentation delivered by Jarkko Pellikka from Nokia, focusing on the theme “Towards Sustainable Industrial Metaverse.” Mr. Pellikka asserted, “There is no readymade metaverse, we need to build it,” underscoring the pivotal role of the industry in spearheading metaverse commercialization. The concept, as outlined, encompasses three key sectors: consumer, enterprise, and industrial metaverse. Emphasizing the collaborative effort required, Mr. Pellikka highlighted numerous pressing questions, including the need for new service models, enhanced security measures, and managing energy costs through interoperability and standardization. In advocating for ecosystem collaboration, Nokia aims to lay the groundwork for the sustainable development of the industrial metaverse’s core capabilities.
